Skull Ink Study 2010

Description

Playing around with download sizes. I think this may be a bit small.

Being at college= difficulty finding time for art.

Recently my friend has been into skulls, I thought i may give it a go since there were a couple lying around in the studio room.
Brought my inks and I'm so happy that i did. I really missed doing my black and white work.
Also, I have been looking at some childrens' book illustrators, and the book "The Crows of Pearblossom" the style is heavy ink and dark.
(Edli, you may want to take a look, it reminded me of you since the artist was from California and the setting of the book was in the desert.)

Now, about the piece.
SO MANY MISTAAAAAKES.
Luckily I had a guy friend help me out (rather, his comments help me improvise...a lot).
There were two main mistakes:

1. I poked a hole in the paper. My friend told me, "Hey, it sort of looks like a triangle". Because the rip also drew some ink, so, figuring it may save the piece I tried it out and added in various sizes of triangles. Which after that proceeded in adding varying line lengths and thicknesses to achieve a 3;d effect into the white background.

2. While doing the swirly shadows beneath the skull, my nip decided to poop ink suddenly after an hour working on it D:
this time around my friend was just as shocked as i was.
But thinking on my feet I thought of adding the mistake and incorporating it by adding more, i.e; BLOODSPATTERS.
But after trying to do this the spatters looked more like fucked up small circles (polka dots) which was NOT what I wanted and messed up the composition. Trying not to panic I thought of the next best thing, elongating my mistake and just going with it. I thought of Japanese sumi and their abstract curly clouds. That seemed to work out rather well, especially composition wise.
Then to pull the heavy black portions, heavy white portions and mediary white and black under the skull I added faint swirl designs (using a brush) on the skull to equalize the contrasts.

The shit i go through to do art.
Ah, I miss it so much. >u<
